Starting with a refresher on the anatomy of the hip joint and surrounding muscles, the lab will look at the causes and clinical signs of common hip pathologies. It will focus on palpation of the soft tissues, skeletal landmarks, and joint movements to show how the clinical examination can lead to a clear differential diagnosis and sometimes a definitive diagnosis. By looking at muscular and fascial links, it will integrate the interplay with the proximal (lumbosacral and sacro-iliac) and distal (stifle) joints to avoid common mistakes. The innervation of the hip (with the sciatic nerve sitting in close proximity) will be explained, giving tips to differentiate between causes of pain (articular, muscular, fascial, neural etc) in this region. These techniques will then be applied for the practical examination and manual therapy of real-life dog patients.
